This pen drawing on counterproof (almost invisible) is related with costume projects contained in the collection of the Menus Plaisirs du Roi kept in the National Archives, assembled in 1752 from drawings of the 1680-1700 period, attributed to Jean Berain (1640-1711) and his workshop.

Especially close is the drawing of a nymph of the same size and substantially the same hand, which is considered to be a project for a ballet costume in 1681. The technique of creating different pen drawings from a counterproof base is found on several drawings of the collection of the Menus Plaisirs and is a common technique of the workshop.

The Royal Menus Plaisirs were under the French monarchy a the service of the King's House, in charge of the ceremonies, parties, and ballets. Great inventiveness reigned, served by the best artists whose work greatly influenced the taste in clothing, but especially in architecture and interior design.
