Natural size head of a bishop in terracotta, wearing a mitre and animated hair and beard. It is not possible to identify the subject, nor the origin of this piece, which is very probably a modello, or preparatory work for a large statue of great size, probably designed to decorate an altar. The study of "old men's heads" was a very popular theme for painters and sculptors alike. In the softness and lack of characterization, as for example visible wrinkles, our head is approaching the work of seventeenth century Italian examples of Algardi or Duquesnoy. Excellent preservation. Mounted on a hollow wooden base.
Composition : Terracott with lacks and shocks, wooden stand
Ref. : md-151
Price & Conditions : Euros 4000
