Very large mantelclock, the case entirely carved in two blocks of white marble ; from a molded base adorned with gilt bronze ornaments emerges a rock on which sits a very fine young naked woman playing with a put, attribute of Fidelity, making the figure most probably an allegory. The rock is decorated with leaves of waterplants in very low relief and a small waterfall carefully polished to create luminous effects. The young bather with mannerist proportions is close to manner of Falconet, but closer even to small marble figures attributed by recent scholarship to the Broche brothers of Belfort (in France) : Joseph (1740- after 1807) and Jean Baptiste Ignace (1741-1794). Especially close to our sculpture is a "seated bather" in the musée Cognac-Jay in the Paris Marais, and to a slighter measure another bather in the museum of Lons-le-Saunier. The beautiful enameled dial with garlands of flowers bearing the marks of the watchmaker Hoguet in Paris, and Merlet, "émailleur". The base decorated with a gilt bronze frieze of playing putti, and various bronze ornaments (some missing). Unverified mechanism.
