Large Fruitwood Christ Corpus, Early 18th Century

This large corpus in superb condition presents all the characters of the French style with measured expressionism.
His head slightly leaning, his face asleep inscribed in curly hair, his eyes closed and his mouth open contribute to this impression of appeasement. The perizonium does not show baroque agitation, but rather a skilful work of drapery with folds in basins. The calm anatomy is nevertheless served by a powerful construction which gives this Christ a monumental character.

The face of the Christ can be compared to the St. Joseph statue in the Church of Saint Sebastian in Nancy, attributed to the brothers Adam, perhaps Nicolas-Sebastian.

Close to the workshops of Lorraine, especially Nancy.
Early eighteenth century.

Very good condition, and superb patina. Some slight cracks, and some discolorations at the level of the lower legs. Two wrought iron nails in the feet. Nails missing hands.

Height: 53.5 cm Width: 34.5 cm
