Impressive bust of the Christ in red Vosges sandstone, remaining of a life-size statue probably destroyed during the revolution. This relic displays fine plastic qualities, expressing a moving yet measured realism. The Christ, in a final surge of energy, seems to lift His head to pronounce these words : "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? " The somber treatment of the face is softened by the delicate curls of the hair and the beard which create a calligraphic frame around this icon. This piece is carved in the beautiful sandstone of the Vosges moutains, naturally pigmented by iron oxides, here colored in red and brown. The provenance of this sculpture is North-Eastern France, perhaps the Metz area. Visible lacks, good substance. Mounted on a beautiful Belgian black stone stand.
